I believe this song to be about a couple who has parted ways for awhile, but long to be together again. Whatever is in their way, they will get through. The narrator was getting so lost at sea, but he thinks it is worth the struggle to stay afloat and work things out. They've been apart for so long, that the possibility of them changing and evolving without being with each other could cause them to be considered strangers. But sometimes, you have to fight for what you want and overcome what might be in your way.

"Hey stranger, when can I call you my own I know I don't know you But there's somewhere I've seen you before Whatever your name is Whatever you do This living between us I'm willing to lose"

The distance isn't worth it; the "life" of society in between them, that went along while they were parted; the branches that grew and formed and created a bigger partition. They've become "strangers" in certain terms… but he's "seen her before", in their past relationship. He knows who they both were, but who have they become?

"Just hold me, if ever our paths may collide I want you to hold me under these darkening skies Whoever you love now Whoever you kiss The ones in between us I'm willing to miss"

He's willing to forget everyone and everything that stood in between them. He was in a dark spot, and if they're going to work out, there will be challenges ahead. He just wants them to hold each other through this darkest moment. If she gives him a second chance, he just wants to be held; because the dangers he couldn't see began to scare him.

"Now I'm drifting out over deep ocean And the tide it won't take me back in In these desperate nights, I'll call you again and again"

He's falling apart without her… he's lost himself in the tide, he's gotten himself into something he doesn't want to be a part of. He's desperate for help in remembering who they are, instead of running after the 'dangers he can't see', or the things he feels like he's missing out on.

"There's a comfort, comfort in things we believe But I live in danger, wanting the things I can't see Wherever you live now Wherever you walk This distance between us I'm willing to cross"

The comfort, the routine, the things they believe… the white picket fence and the happily ever after were the comforts they believed. But he wanted to get out of that comfort zone, and find excitement or "danger" or the "recklessness" he may be missing out on.

I'm just saying… I can relate to him.
