I never thought about this song with any kind of political undertones.

If however it is directed at the US that changes things. I don't see how it can be because, if it was he would be wishing it to disapear because he loved it/missed. Which wouldn't make sense. It being directed to Fidel kinda works, cuz he probably once believed in Fidel in his youth and was terribly let down by the realities of his regime and so he wishes those memories of believeing in Communism would leave because it was too painful to look back on a time when he gave his heart to something that let him down.

All that said, this song, for me, looses lots of emotional punch if it is thought as a subtle reflection on his thoughts on Cuban Marxism or Fidel or the US. And I don't anyone gets that caught up in political idealogy any way. Not a lot of people can relate to that kind of thing. Most (probably all really) people however can relate to loosing someone they love/ed. The most straight foward interpretation is the best - a wildly poetic song about wishing to forget someone gone that meant so much to you because remembering them hurts.

Awesome song.
