The whole first stanza is about his becoming a "born again" Christian in "the summer of his 27th year."

He is singing about quietly waling in the mountains, "Seeking grace in every step he takes," and talking with God (listening to his casual reply).

He does take great pleasure in the outdoors, but lets not put the cart before the horse.

I'm sorry to disagree but I knew John well and use to sing with him. He was not a "born again Christian". By saying he was "born again" he means that he emerged from a depressing period of having to replace Chad Mitchell in the Chad Mitchell Trio. Think about that...it was like "The Frank Sinatra Trio Starring Joe Smith!" John saw God as nature in all it's glory. He was not a member of a church and never referred to Christ. He was closest to Zen Buddhism in his beliefs.
