I'll probably catch flack for this, but the theme of this song really reminds me alot of Deathcab For Cutie's "Someday You Will Be Loved." Either way, I think this is a really great and somber song, even though the music itself is a tad deceptive.

"When love is real, Like a flower loves a bee."

It's like that poem by Richard Bach, "If you love something, let it go."

"Now while the beat is slow Here in your arms I sway Now that the light is low There's something I want to say."

This part, to me, conjures up a scene of a highschool dance during a slow song in the arms of a "puppy" love. He's in this really intimate embrace with her, and has to drop the bomb.

"I guess you've known it for a while Did I mean trouble?" (other sites say "But" I mean trouble)

I remember the phrase "He/she means trouble" usually means they're serious, if it's "But" then it's the narrator saying "This isn't a joke, I mean this."

If it's "Did I" then the girl is asking herself if he was really genuine with her before, and she must've known for a while that he was just leading her on, through word of mouth through friends.

"I only want to see you smile, And I burst this bubble."

He did the opposite of making her smile and has dashed her hopes and made her feel quite low.

"The hardest thing is to let go."

It's either hard for the narrator, because he has genuine feelings, or it's hard for the girl because she's already infatuated and attached.

"Then I know you're meant to give yourself to someone else not me." Someday you will be loved...

"And I could carry on with you Does that sound crazy?"

I could try, keep up appearances, fake it.

"I think you feel the same way too, And you can't face it."

Deep down she knows he's right, but she's still blinded by infatuation, which will eventually fade.

"Can you let go? Cuz that's love that's real."

Real love is allowing the other person their freedom, freedom to choose. You could tie them down, play the pity card, but that's no foundation for a relationship.
