This can be a bit of a long-shot, but I actually don't think this song is about two friends or two sisters. I interpret it as a girl who's going through a tough time in life, especially with her faith. I think this song is another song with a Christian perspective.

"Seventeen years by her side Broke the same bread Wore the same clothes and we said We're sisters with nothing between If one of us fall The other will soon be following"

I think this is about a girl who is Christian and has had a good life this far; she trusts God, believes in Him and knows that without help of God, things wouldn't go so well.

"Both of you fell the same day You don't know why One of you never woke up And you laid your body down on the floor You're desperate to hear her footsteps again But this house is on fire, we need to go"

She's hit by a crisis without a warning (death, a turn in life or something else that's evil), and suddenly it doesn't feel as bright anymore and she feels as if God has abandoned her. She's maybe even ashamed of herself and blames herself for not trusting God enough. She's afraid of what has happened and tries to get her faith back. The crisis haunts her and she tries to cure it with her faith as she always has done, but it doesn't work.

"Oh, you don't have to go it alone, go it alone

Run for your life, my love Run and you don't give up With all that you are All that you want I will be close behind Run for your life"

I think the chorus is God assuring her that he's with her even if things feel horrible. He tells her to run away from the evils that haunt her, to not give in not matter what and be sure that He's with her through it all.

"She had a fire inside And that terrified you You swore that you'd never lose your control Baby, let yourself go 'cause part of you hides And I know the hunger inside of you is strong You can only hold back the river so long"

The crisis that hit her was stronger and more severe than she expected and she's so scared of the feeling and that it'll never be alright again. She tries to get the crisis under control since it's suffocating her, and she's afraid of what will happen if she don't. God tells her to relax, that the way she's handling it brings out the worse in her and this is not how He wants her to act. She has maybe lost all her will for life right now but God knows it's buried under all of her sadness and fright. He will take care of it for her since He promised her He would.

This is only my interpretation and it can be WAY off what it really means, but I wanted to share anyway. :) Cheers!
