He's a frog with a PhD, so perhaps it's just a neat way of making a frog sound much more important:)....or it's just an alternative spelling since 'ph' makes the F sound. I'd say ask Peter, Paul, and Mary, but at least one of them is no longer with us...unfortunately.

Mary Travers (vocalist) died in Sept 2009 at the age of 72. Dick Kniss (bassist) died in Jan 2012 at the age of 74. I hadn't realized the latter so I'm glad I looked it up...
