Can anyone help me understand what these two lines mean?

Now with their hands held high, they reached out for the open skies And in one last breath they built the roads they'd ride to their death

Personally, when I hear this verse, I think of two young lovers who boldly step out to take on the world; just the two of them together - forging their own life. However, the road can get rough and arduous, and if they're committed to one another, it's a road full of highs and lows that they'll both, essentially, ride to their deaths. You can look at it from an individual's perspective who's looking out on the world deciding what path to take for himself, but throughout the song, I constantly get the sense that this song is about more...

@cybergrail I think this is another reference to man wanting to reach the heavens like the tower of Babel. Man like to play God or act like God, and thinks he can get into heaven or the promised land with God's mercy or help.
