Ruth Moody of the Wailin' Jennys explained the meaning: She was on a tour with her first band, Scrooge McDuck, which was comprised of "four hygienically challenged boys and myself." Ruth was feeling lonely in Calgary and tried calling home in Winnipeg, missing the comfort of her mother's voice. Her sister answered the phone, but her mother wasn't home. This song was written from the lonesomeness bred by being away from home. Moody dedicates it to her mother.
