To me, it sounds like someone who is recovering from a traumatic brain injury after an awful automobile collision "Driving home late, Speeding all the way. Alone in the rain."
My own cousin survived a such a collision. He recovered physical mobility but due to the brain injury continues to experience something akin to amnesia. Even to the extent that he maintains that his name is Joe rather than his actual name Mike. In some other ways he's as sharp or sharper than he was prior to his injury thirty some years ago but other ways quite obviously not.
