Lyric discussion by Naomim17

I love this song!! it's one of my favourites of Marina's lyrically, although it is very short. I wish that she had turned it into a full EP rather than just a demo! but even still the lyrics are incredible and when I noticed that no one has tried to analyse it yet I thought that I would because it would be such a shame to leave this song unnoticed. Its not your a typical love song. It plays on the common phrase 'love is blind' and in my opinion I feel that Marina is singing about falling for someone without realising the true person that they are, or she thought that she new the person but they turned out to be not what she had anticipated.

"I had a feeling when I met you Didn't think you had it in you I smell a little bit of danger And got my heart handcuffed to a stranger I am a fool to not cut the ties That bind the eyes that loved you"

Hence the man turned out to be not who she thought he was, a stranger who she is bound to. she want's to 'cut the ties that bind the eyes that loved you" but she cant really because she is still in love despite what others are telling her.

"My mother says, run as fast as you can Narrow roads lead to narrow minded men"

the line narrow roads lead to narrow minded men could suggest that she didnt really have many options or she settled for less than best and as a result she got less than best in her relationship.

"My skin is sizzling, it might have been you But you were busy walking in your daddy's shoes"

This stanza may refer to her lover not giving her the attention she needs. He is to concerned with chasing his career rather than caring for her.

"Love is cruel When you realize what you give got life To someone that has given up on you"

I think this is fairly self explanatory. she is feeling heartache becuase she realises that she has put all of her time, love and effort into the relationship and it hasn't been reciprocated, he has given up on her, he doesnt care.

"I'm thinking and say I think a lot of you Regardless of what you did And what I didn't do"

despite it all she doesn't think badly of him she realises that they were both at fault "regardless of what you did and what I didn't do" and that there relationship was inevitably going to fail.

"Jealousy made you want to own me And that was what left us both a little lonely"

ok so that really speaks for itself

"I swear I'm done, I am rich, I am poor I am fat, I am thin This type of love don't wanna win'

ok so this part i think she is refering to/ regurgitating probably what her ex old her all the time. Preety much the essence is that she was never good enough for him. And that is not a healthy relationship hence "this type of love don't wanna win" she realises this and no longer wants a part of it.

I love the ending line

"nobody's gonna blindfold me"

i think its so powerful!!! she's basically saying that she will no longer be blinded by love anymore and from now on she will be cautious.

I really wish this song was on the album! there arn't really many love songs on The Family Jewels besides from Hermit the Frog and obsessions.

Completely agree with this but I also think there's airs of an abusive relationship, "danger", "run as fast as you can" even walking in his "daddy's shoes" (many abusive people come from abusive environments). "What [he] did" was become violent, and what she "didn't do" was run
