This song is absolutely amazing! I think it is about Jon contemplating his faith and the meaning of life. He realizes that life isnt always perfect and realizes that there is some reason for this. He acknowledges God's presence in the world we live in today and that he is with us always. Anywhere here is my interpretation of the song by each line/paragraph:
Walking along the high tide line
Watching the pacific from the side lines
Wonder what it means to live together?
Wanting more than just guidelines
//Wondering what it is like to be in Heaven everlastingly with God. He wants more than just guidelines and wants to know the whole truth and why things are the way they are
Looking for signs in the night sky,
Wishing that I wasn’t such a nice guy
Wonder what it means to live together?
Wonder what it means to die?
He is contemplating more about it. Lookng for clues in His creation. Maybe he wishes he wasn't such a nice guy so he wouldn't be troubled with the daily stuggles Christians partake? And also because then he wouldn't be so curious and contemplative. He wonders what it is like to be with with God after death.
Chorus -
I know that there's a meaning to it all
A little resurrection every time I fall
You got your babies, I got my hearses
Every blessing comes with a set of curses
I got my vices, I got my vice verses
I got my vice verses
He knows there is a meaning to it all because he feels resureccted every time he falls. God is there for you even when you sin, no one is made perfect. "every blessing counts with a set of curses" He admits he has his sins and imperfections which he is admitting them in his verses. "I got my vices, I got my vice verses"
The wind could be my new obsession
The wind can be my next depression
The wind goes anywhere it wants to
Wishing that I learned my lesson
The ocean sounds like a garage band
Coming at me like a drunk man
The ocean tells me a thousand stories
None of them are lies
Chorus -
I know that there's a meaning to it all
A little resurrection every time I fall
You got your babies, I got my hearses
Every blessing comes with a set of curses
I got my vices, I got my vice verses
I got my vice verses
Let the blessed be glad
Be all my epitaph
With these rising and falling
And after all, we're just water
And I am just soul
With a body of water and bones
Water and bones
Where is God in the night sky?
Where is God in the city light?
Where is God in the earthquake?
Where is God in the genocide?
Where are you in my broken heart?
Everything seems to fall apart
Everything feels rusted over
Tell me that you're there
Chorus -
I know that there's a meaning to it all
A little resurrection every time I fall
You got your babies, I got my hearses
Every blessing comes with a set of curses
I got my vices, I got my vice verses
These are my vice verses
These are my vice verses
A little resurrection every time I fall
This is an obvious reference to the lasting and continuing grace that Jesus gave to pay for our sins. And everytime he falls its as if its a little ressurection but Jesus said it was finished so all we have to do is repent everytime we fall. The Bible without the ressurection is just like any other book then. The ressurection is what seals the deal of all previous hopes and themes.
