i don't think this song is sad at all, it's HOPEFUL.
so many of us are deeply grieved by the pains and evils of the world, and this song is saying "look, someday you'll be free." your life on this planet, this plane of existence, WILL END (="no matter how hard you try, you'll never get out of this world alive") the world is the physical plane. this song presents a notion that the afterlife is something of beauty, peace, and serenity, and not to be feared. that's my take anyway.
