Lyric discussion by TheCrazyDog123

I think this song is about an argument or debate. I think the album art supports my theory (if you've seen it, you know what I mean.)

As for the lyrics:

rest assured they're weighing words in sympathetic ink, and they don't waste their time suspending disbelief. (Debaters like to use facts and twist them to sympathize with debater's cause, and they won't listen to anyone who doesn't believe what they are saying)

they face the facts with thinking caps they map out and display, but that's not the only way. (They look at things in a way that makes them look intelligent, but you as their opponent, don't have to)

common sense won't pay the rent and doesn't grow on trees, but splitting hairs can get you anything you need. (finding common sense in what a debater is saying can be difficult("doesn't grow on trees") and it doesn't appeal to the audience as much as emotional statements, but if you take things apart and use pieces to your advantage, you'll be successful)

who would have though connecting dots might get you to the point? (If you analyze things well and fit them together, then you might make to a good point) but charity's a rarity, almost as much as modesty (I think this line means that your opponent will make it difficult to "connect the dots", and they will always word their statements in a way to try to look better than anyone else)

take the bait, and save however much it takes before we lay to waste however much it takes.(I'm not sure on this line, but think it means that in a debate you should try to exploit your opponent's traps, and save it for a good time before they destroy your argument completely)

rest assured they're weighing words in sympathetic ink, and i don't waste my time suspending disbelief. (I think Darroh is now speaking for himself, in that he wouldn't stray from his cause, either) masterminds want bottom lines to map out and display (the "masterminds" are the extremely charismatic and intelligent debaters, and they believe in getting to their point and not stalling. They also try to show the intricacies of their arguments) if i have every bit of faith, i won't be turning in my grave. (Darroh says that if he just believes what their saying without arguing, then they won't defeat him and leave him troubled)

take the bait, and save however much it takes before you've made your wish, however much it takes.

take your own advice before you take a side(if you are going to join a debate, be sure to follow you're own arguments; don't be a hypocrite) look for middle ground (see if there's a possible midway solution.) (opinion->[i.e. god vs. evolution's "middle ground" would be theistic evolution]<-opinion)

take the bait, and save however much it takes before we lay to waste however much it takes. before we lie in wait, however long it takes. (the new "lie in wait" line probably means you should do the aforementioned procedure(exploit traps) before your opponent waits to catch you with yet another trap)

So that's my interpretation of the song, I tried to avoid twisting it to support my own beliefs, since i find that an extremely annoying yet common problem on this site.

I'm very glad you mentioned the album art. This does lead the listener have "political debate" in mind when listening to the song. I will say however, I'm not hearing the "V" in "save". I believe it may be "take the bait, and say however much it takes before we lay to waste however much it takes." I may be wrong--just an observation!

@TaPaPaa: Well, for another one of their songs: "Tall Tales Taste Like Sour Grapes", one line had the word "hogwash" in it, but I couldn't hear the "sh" until i listened to the live version on youtube. I guess you can listen to the live version of this :)
