I think this song is not so much about regretting someone's own past, but realizing that not all people can be happy being who they are. The writer is one of these people and in order to be happy with one specific person, he/she has to become someone else.
Or atleast that is how it applies to me. I have been abandonned and hurt so many times by people I care about, I figured it had to be me, I figured that I had to be the problem. I turned myself into an entirely different person and people still didn't like me.
To me, this song is about desperation for that one person to give a damn about you.
