Lyric discussion by TheAftermath

The first word of the song is "These" and not "The" first off, lol.

In my opinion this song is about addiction, not just drug addiction but anything that one can become addicted to (i.e sex, money, drugs, earthly possesions, gambling ect.).

"These countless times we fall to ruin. These myriad days are so relentless."

This part shows how people have an everyday struggle with their addictions and how everyday is the same. The weight of the burdens they carry everyday are unrelenting and it seems hopeless. For those of you who didn't know and/or were curious a myriad is an endless amount, so "myriad days" translates to endless days, that's where I got this from.

"It isn't everyone's frailty to stop functioning and stop breathing."

This also contributes to that conclusion because frailty is another word for weakness. In other words, not everyone wants to go through the same hardships everyday with the same crushing results that have brought them down many, many times before.

"The never content sensation of a tapeworm drug looking for it's angry fix" This line represents the need to repeat the same actions (such as using drugs) to sate the restlessness or pain you're experiencing. In essence, you'll never be content with yourself without that daily fix. And the last part of the sentence implies reluctance to use that drug or object, but you feel you need it to be normal again.

"Will mutual fear bring us peace? Is ruining your day, ruining your life?"

The first question is pretty much asking are you willing to risk everything (like you have countless times before) just for that moments satisfaction. Everyone, including yourself knows what you're doing is wrong, but you continue to do it anyways. The second question is just self explanatory, lol.

"What happened to my noisy planet? When did the sun go nova? In dim light, I can tell by the hollow look in your eyes."

This part could pertain to one individual or a whole group of people doing essentially the same things. Like the first two questions represent the same thing, pretty much asking, "What happened to you?". Saying that before all of this, you were a different person than what I can see now, look at what you're doing to yourself. Just by looking into your eyes I can see how this has changed you and caused a "metamorphasis", if you will.

"Using technology to live on this slow night."

This just show how you're unable to live with yourself so you need to replace an "emptiness" in a sense with the addiction, just replace the word technology with drugs or sex or whatever it may be.

"I'm starting to realize I'll die long before."

No matter how many times you try to help someone, unless they want to change it won't happen. The person trying to help another, is giving up hope that they can be of any service to turn this persons life around.

"I've done it before, to become extinct. I've done it before, I'll become extinct."

This part is about how someones been in that same position, and if they continue on that path, it'll end up in their undoing and possibly death.

"Crunch the numbers till we become sick."

This states the statistics against the actions you're taking, looking at how the addiction has been the downfall of so many other people, it's insanity that so many others would do that same thing knowing what the results will be.

"Sway with the waves, with the waves change, and we'll find our way back to the shore when it's over."

I saved the chorus for last because it has the strongest message of the song. The first part shows how the addiction has taken over and now you're "swaying" in it. You're life is completely changed by chasing this around only resulting in a vicious cycle that'll end up in your destruction. However, the last part shows hope, that if you can really be shown what is going on and how this is destroying you, you can find yourself again. It's also saying that during this period you drift away from God and when it's all said and done, his unconditional love will welcome you with open arms. But for those that don't believe it could be any higher power or person that helps you to change your life around, for me personally it is God that's shown me how to live again.

This is how I interpretted it because I've struggled with addiction and God has shown me a better way of life. Hopefully this makes sense to those of you reading this, this is only my opinion though. Norma Jean keeps getting better and better since their start and this song by far, is the best one on the "Meridional" album in my opinion.
