The things considered acceptable as "discipline" for children: an adult doing the same thing to another adult would be guilty of assault and would go to prison.

We claim to be MORE interested in protecting children, don't we?

The double-bind aspect: studies have shown if children are repeatedly put in these sort of "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situations by their parents, they're much more likely to develop schizophrenia as adults. Which is a horrifying illness.

Much of the behavior people identify as "crazy" is actually due to symptoms of tardive dyskinesia, a neurological disorder which is a side-effect of long-term use of drugs (neuroleptics) such as Thorazine. It causes involuntary muscular movements, can be painful, and leads to even fully-recovered mentally ill people being shunned. There's no cure for TD. Newer antipsychotic meds such as Risperdal and Zyprexa are supposed to be less likely to cause it, but pharmaceutical companies make all kinds of unfounded claims.
