I think that this song is about being in a rut or a depression, being compared to the winter that has connotations to be cold and endless. The sun, to me, almost seems like a tease, like it makes you feel that there is happiness outside of the dark place but he can't quite succeed in reaching it. He feels stuck in the sad situation but also feels that it might be his demise.
And that is my very corny take on this incredibly amazing song :) Dallas Green is such a brilliant vocalist.
