This song has personal meaning to me, but it goes along with what I believe it is about.
It is about a girlfriend/boyfriend thing, but like the girl broke up with the guy (Tim narrating) and he still loves her, but she doesn't want him back. And no matter how hard he tries, he just cant get over this girl.
"Tell me what I'm supposed to do, with all these leftover feelings of you, cause I don't know"
His nightmares becoming real are the fact that this girl he downright loves, has moved on, but he still hasn't, at a point believing there was still hope.
He also doesn't think she gets how much he really loves or cares for her and that he thinks of her in daily things that probably shouldn't remind him of her and what they once had.
"And I don't think, you see, the places inside me that i find you"
"So leave me, by the roadside, and hang me out to dry" is a metaphor for just leaving him behind to move on with her life, because well if she left him at the roadside, she'd (assumingly) be in a car, able to speed off and get on with things quiker then him, who has to walk to the destination.
"and I don't know, how we, woke up one day somehow thought we knew, exactly what we're supposed to do" This just applied to my situation, because we split up mutually, but we thought we knew exactly what we were doing, but I know now that I really didn't letting her go...sorry about personal ranting on a public website people, i know that's what myspace is for.
