I think it's about a guy, maybe John Oh, maybe not, saying that he does want to be with the girl, but he cares too much about her so he CAN'T be with her because he doesn't want to hurt her.
He's saying his tour schedule is crazy so he won't be able to keep up with the relationship he's in, so she should just forget him, and not forgive him because he's across the country playing a show while she's at home all alone missing/needing him, and he can't be there for her.
And I think he's also saying the way he explained it to the girl was rude, or upsetting because of this part of the song:
"If I could gather up the nerve,
I’d put my feelings into words,
And if I weren’t so young, or stupid, or restless,
I might be able to just soon forget this."
So he's hoping they'll just both move on, although I think he still has feelings for her and it'll be hard for both of them.
