Not many comments... Awesome song, even if it is a re-work. Anyway, i'm thinking it's a Danny Boy-ish message, as the singer (Andy) is far from his home at war, as noted by the "I woke in California many miles from Fairmount Hill" and the initial reference to the adventure at Fairmount Hill being a dream.

"I dreamt I'd fought a violent war for the hand of this darling gal" shows that he's thinking within the dream of the war he's fighting, in which he is risking his life for that of his loved ones. When he finally returns, many of his friends are long gone, and cannot even thank him, and the ones who still live are forever past the prime of their lives... Truly amazing song.
