Even though mago is right, I do see taruto's way of looking at the song, and I think it would be a lot more powerfull if it really was about this.

I think this refers to later in the story, when he is got over the love he had for her. He has no regrets, he enjoyed loving her. He fought and lost, and he is wounded, but he is leaving all that story behind, he is letting go of that one-way love he has for her, he's done waiting for things to get better.

"I've waited for so long!"

Here he just shows how much he was waiting, and wanting to stop loving her. I can relate to this bit, when you love someone and you break up, you still love them, and that brings pain, since you miss them and can't understand why.
