I'd agree with the theory about abandoning everything, seems to be a longing to be free of modern stresses. I think though there's a kind of joke with Yannis singing "I hear the futurebirds, it's called spaceships, astronauts and all" as in the future is supposedly all about space exploration but he's saying if he could he would literally trade all that for wings so we could all be free as a bird I guess. Sounds pretty far off probably but I do think there's a bit of a joke in this song.
