Lyric discussion by charms

I wonder why no one has commented on this song yet - such a beautiful, deep song. It is clearly referring to the (equally wonderful) film "Wings of Desire", a film that revolves around an angel, Damiel, becoming a mortal for the love of a woman. Cassiel is Damiels closest friend, and it remains unclear whether he is giving up his immortality as well. What makes the song particularly remarkable is the fact that at the time, Caves songs were predominately sinister and gloomy, and only their sarcasm saved them from appearing kitschy to me. Cassiel's song is therefore even more remarkable, as in this song Cave unveils the lyrical side of his voice; I don't recall Cave being that compassionate (and therefore vulnerable) before. The end of the song is very comforting - recommended for dreadful moments.
