i think this song is bowie expressing his belief in god when he was young. "In the corner of the morning in the past I would sit and blame the master first and last"

as he got older he became a man who did not fit into gods view. "All the roads were straight and narrow And the prayers were small and yellow And the rumour spread that I was aging fast Then I ran across a monster who was sleeping by a tree. And I looked and frowned and the monster was me"

he then stopped beliveing in god after after reading Kahlil Gibran and acknoledged that god was made by man only a couple thousand years ago. "For I realized that God's a young man too"

and traded religion for logic.

after having what accepting his sexuality he thought what if god really does exist "When God did take my logic for a ride" the next verse is about before a gay experiance.

the rest of the song is him saying that it was worth it and if god does exist he'll wait for the devil.
