I never thought of it that way, viola, cool. but my idea was that the dog was chained to live on only the path that the owner (the narrator) wanted to. so at first, mr. narrator says that the dog is unfortunate, and his chaining echoes the narrator's own life being held on a leash by society.

so then he throws off his chains and frees himself. but then he finds out he doesn't like the cold freedom away from society, so he gladly comes back, finding it much easier to live like a dog instead of thinking for himself and abandoning the standards he used to itch to throw off.

the moral: it's much easier to take the path that's given to you. just like a dog.
