I do not think, that it is only about an "ugly guy", being a loner. To me, that interpretation is too superficial.. I would go so far and say, that this "ugliness" is inside. He does not believe, that he is worth of anything. He seems to mess up everything, thinking, he has a big "L" tattooed on his head. He is suffering under serious self-confidential problems, here. Still, he knows, he can love and wants to do so - but it seems as if everybody's too good for him, because of his inner ugliness, just as i said.
