Lyric discussion by marquicerise

Of course, again, it may not be easy to define what is archetypically male. Norman [band member] once referred to Swans as "sensitive guys." There are now organized groups like Riot Grrrls. I tried to comment on this is in songs such as "Volcano," which appeared on A Far Cry, a compilation record of women in music and will also be on Soundtracks For The Blind. I was being ironic while also undestanding the kind of role-playing that is taking place, and the persona you become onstage... the way that male thrust (that's an appropiate word) infltrates what women do. That song also comments on all I've gone through in making music for ten years and still being essentially ignored or invisible. It's a kind of eulogy, and a word of caution to other women.

I was always barefoot onstage, and I stepped in some glass as I opened the set "a cappela" to prepare the crowd for the barrage of sound to come. I was singing in front of this drunken, drugged mob of boys, and I was pummeled by mushy tomatoes right at my vagina-right there. It left a stain (an image I used in the song "Volcano"), but I didn't even blink. And when the song was through, I looked right in their eyes and blew them a kiss and walked back to my position behind the keyboards.
