I think they were lovers and then she (the girl Ani's singing to)died and it's expressing how guilty Ani(or the narrator)'s feeling about her lack of enthusiasm in the whole ordeal. and the narrator will never be able to tell her lover "how sorry [she is]" because the girl's dead.
