Ok; to me this song is about someone who jumps into a fight. When there are 2 people fighting one on one and someone else jumps in he's known as the "3rd Man in". Its really a song about cowardice. The Murphy's are really into Hockey and in hockey there is a special penalty for someone who is the 3rd man in a fight (usually because thats what causes a bench clearing brawl) (same concept can be applied to fighting in the street)
