The lyrics might be about the anger and impotence the protagonist feels about how his lover was treated in a past relationship. The diary could also be a metaphor for our tendency to constantly compare current experiences to previous ones, a 'golden age' attitude causing unhappiness in the present. Or maybe that's too deep...
