I don't think this song's about heaven or anything religious. Fastball's just turning a story that they heard about a disappearing couple into a great mysterious song. For some reason, when I was younger, I pictured not a couple but a group of young men walking off together on a gold-paved road--that's who I always thought 'they' were. I don't know why the idea of a couple never occured to me.
