Great song, another of Ben Folds' character sketches. "Annie waits / For a call / From a friend / The same / It’s the same / Was it always the same? / Annie waits for the last time." Annie is upset in love again, she waits for the call from the man she loves but it never comes. "It's the same" - this is not the first time she's been disappointed. "The clock never stops...never waits / She’s growing old / It’s getting late / And so he forgot, he forgot / Maybe not / Maybe he’s been seriously hurt." It's getting too late for romance, Annie hopes he's just forgotten to call and it's nothing more serious than that. But the singer suggests "Maybe he’s been seriously hurt." Maybe the man she waits for is also afraid of romance like Annie, 'once bitten twice shy'. And the singer says he'll be there for her if no one else is. A sad song of a life wasted.
