This song is so amazing lyrically not to mention musically!! I think the song is about a guy who hurt somone that he loved and he has become their "winter", their cold season. The guy is saying that he is sorry for letting her down and that he loves her so much, but he won't stand still and become her winter...ie "I won't be any one's excuse to cry".
