Deep down in the depths of forgotten dreams
so far away
so long ago it seems
the memory comes of a distant beach
pale sand stretching far from reach
it was there that I found my princess of the sand

As I traced the foam, pebbles beneath my feet
I looked behind
and I saw this one so sweet
she came to me and I saw in her eyes
the heavy toll of a thousand sighs
I called her my princess of the sand

She stared at me and my mind was in a maze
as we moved along in a summer sea-dream haze
she moved her mouth but there came no sound
the message she brought can never be found
but I called her my princess of the sand

One moment we walked with the night breeze in our face
then I looked-- she'd gone,
of her presence, there was no trace
where she went or came from,
who can know?
or if she'll ever return
to help me know who she is
my princess of the sand

Sometime when the summer nights come back
I'll go back to the sea
and I'll follow that sandy track
I'll look around
and I'll hope to find
that strange young dream close behind
I'll call her my princess of the sand

General CommentCan anyone say,,, genius? The lyrics to this song speak for themselves. I only wish that one day I might be able to express myself in such a poetic and musically intertwined way.

General CommentI totally agree, this song is incredibly poetic. There's a lot of melancholy but it never gets depressing. I think it's interesting how he describes his memories. He remembers the look she gave him, the night breeze in his face och tracing the foam in the water, but he doesn't remember what she said. That seems to be true of a lot of memories, you remember feelings, sounds, smells och looks, but it's often hard to recall what you were talking about.

General CommentWonderful - one of my favourites. Nick Drake is a poet in every sense of the word.

General CommentIn the new recording or this song, featured on the Family Tree album, Drake actually speaks about the song.

General CommentI think that what makes him such a wonderful poet is the fact that his lyrics are always so unpretentious, just pure inspired poetry, moved by the simple desire of creating something beautiful. He didn't even think of himself as a poet.

General Comment"Strange Meeting" is the title of a Wilfred Owen poem about an infantryman who has a dream in which he meets a man he has killed.
I don't see much of a connection, but Nick would very likely have read the poem. Of course, the name may have older antecedents that i don't know.

General CommentHe covered this song, very well indeed, but did not write it (and he tell us this in the bootleg album "Family Tree"). Thing is there is NO info on the net about who wrote the original. Can someone who knows please post this.
