"It's All In Your Mind" as written by Liz Winstanley, Timothy Hawes and Pete Kirtley....
Well it's all in your mind
It's all in your mind
Well it's all in your mind
It's all in your mind

And I wanted to be
I wanted to be
Wanted to be
Your good friend

Well I cannot believe
You got a devil up your sleeve
And he's talking to me
And I cannot believe

And I wanted to be
And I wanted to be
I wanted to be
Your good friend

You're all scared and stiff
A sick stolen gift
And the people you're with
They're all scared and stiff

And I wanted to be
I wanted to be
Wanted to be
Your good friend

Song Meaningi think this song is about a person having psychofrenia and being 'all in your mind' and beck not caring and still wants to be that persons friend and be there for them.

General Commentyes a beautiful song indeed. one of his best (one of the best period imo)

i also have always gotten the vibe of it being about somebody with some sort of mental issues (or somebody who has some personal demons to work out). so weather already there or bought on about by outside forces. or both. and the wanting to connect with them in spite of it all, wanting to bust the mindset they're in. wanting the message to reach their heart. but it's hard cause theres many things standing in the way of that happening. the person in the trouble has a messed up mindset weather they were born this way, or raised this way, or something had happen to them in the past to cause it, or they got this way because of drugs, or hanging with the wrong crowd (whatever the case may be). just whatever they got going on in their life in standing in the way. of really being able to make that really good strong bond with them that he would like to. and because of that he feels a lot of empathy towards this person in question.

that's the main point here. now it may or may not have been somebody he knew all that well. i could see it both ways. sorta. but ya know it doesn't sound like he ever really got thru to this person. they may have died and this is him remembering it and going over it. it could be somebody out there he knew or wanted to know better and just grew apart from or never really got to know as well as he would have liked because of this.

and for that matter and this is maybe pushing it a bit. but it could be about himself looking into a mirror and not feeling in touch with himself. but telling himself over and over again that it's all in your (my) mind and not to worry. and not to get to carried away with things and to calm down.

it is a very calming song. almost lullaby-ish in it's slow, sleepiness, reaching out for some hugging arms.

the vinyl version that mr 1977 was talking about is also my favorite version of this song as well (tho it's a good song in any version but yea that was the original and i like it best as well) i have the record in fact and i don't have many records nor a record player at the moment either. i hear that one first. the sea chance has grown on me to but ya know the first you hear gets to become "the" version, maybe. ah. i don't know that one is very special. so i can see how somebody could go 10 years not hearing it and remembering that magic it had to it (more so than any other version. tho like i said in any version this is nice no doubt)
this version is also now on the deluxe version of the One Foot in The Grave album now as well.

    :)

General CommentGodDAMN this song is fucking amazing..it should have 2871493857 comments. This song makes me cry, it is really simple and nice. it describes a lot of relationships I have had with people. It doesn't sound like Beck at all, the voice at least. Weird, but beautiful.

General CommentI agree, it's a beautiful song. The entire Sea Change album is epic, but this would be my favourite from it.

I'm not real sure on the meaning. My guess would be he's referring to an ex-girlfriend who he would have liked to have maintained a friendship with, but as time passed he discovered she just wasn't worth it. He realises that she's changed, for the worse: "well I cannot believe you got a devil up your sleeve'' and "you're all scared and stiff, a sick stolen gift''. That's my interpretation anyway.

    Stunning song though.

General CommentI miss the vinyl (I think 9") version of this song, that I heard at my friend's house sometime around 1996. The only melody in this previous version is a simple acoustic guitar. I like the way this one sounds, just so simple but powerful. Reminds me of my college days. I haven't been able to find this version ever since, and it's been 10 years since I last heard it, but I remember loving it.

General CommentWanting friendship from someone you thought was a lot different than you expected them to be aka how they acted/reason why it ended.

guy dumped me and i pressumed we could be friends because we got along well together and had so much in common, but that idea and perception was just in my head, it wasn't realistic.

"it's all in your mind" is saying the same thing. It's only in my head that we could be friends...because realistically it's not what you want nor would it work.

ain't love grand? p.s. due to my ex being still stuck on his dumb fashionanble ex-girlfriend both were from LA and Beck being from L.A. You LA boys need to stay away from women involved in fashion. I mean really, what's with cool dudes into girls who are superficial and care only about themselves?

I'm glad Beck found Marissa Ribsi because it gives me hope that even if he dated a major ahole liek I did and Beck did, there's someone nice out there who may not screw you over.

General Comment"When you're all scared and stiff, a sick stolen gift" Have you ever had that moment when you're surrounded by friends but you're still thinking of the person that truly makes your heart ache but they aren't there? That's what I think this whole verse is about. It may be simple but I think that's what makes this song brilliant. Possibly about a friend who is a recovering drug addict or has psychological problems and needs to be reintroduced to the world instead of isolating themselves. This song itself feels like a sick stolen gift.
