"Mama" as written by Richard Allan Eastman, Ralph Tresvant, Ricardo Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronald De Voe and Bobby Hart....
Mother may I, I would say
Yes sweet baby take it away
It won't be long, just remember that
Powerful is the woman in you
Stay true
And she'd come to me when fire & water was gone
To caress the empty with a song
Saying why cry for anger that bullets the sky
Just remember I'll remember & mama
I'll get by...
I know my face seems crazed & wild
But I got her eyes
A mama's child am I
She's blessed with grace & is smooth as a line
And when I shade she helps me shine
And she comes to me when there's nothing I believe
And holds me so high yes I am free
Saying why hold the anger
It won't let you fly
Just remember I'll remember & mama mama
I'll get by...
Confused by my own illusions
She said that it's only my pride
And even the simplest solutions
Still won't heal my mind
So I'll remember
I'll remember and I'll get by

General CommentI believe that she is refering to "Mama" as Earth Mother, Goddess, as in Creator or Higher Power. Teacher, lover, or even inner voice consciousness.

"I know my face seems crazed and wild, but I got her eyes
    A mama`s child am I."

She does`nt look like her mother in the way she usually behaves, she is mutch to wild of a child for that, but she`s got her mamas eyes and can say with pride "A mama`s child am I"

"and when I shade she helps me shine"
Her mother knows how to make her feel bether.

"And she comes to me when there`s nothing I believe and holds me so high"
Her mom is such a support for her whenever she is in the dark, alone and are depressed.

    "Saying why hold the anger
    it won`t let you fly"

theese lines is the most important for me in this song. Like motherly wisdom that tells her doughter how to live a happy life, by letting go of things, like anger or hate, that can come in the way.
    Great song!

Beth hart wrote this to her mother, and it is really beautiful to see someone appreciating a parent so much.

General CommentThis song makes me feel sad. I see a broken mother'daughter relationship in this song. The mother, struggling with her own demons and the daughter just wanting her mother's real love and acceptance, getting some distorted form of that, in her mother's own dysfunctional way. Then the daughter sees the mother in herself.
