Top of the fold
Toast of the town
Everyone stops when you come around
They hold their breath for you

Heroes are born
Idols are made
We're all fools for this factory fame
And you've got the brand new face
And you've got the brand new face
Golden boy

Beauty untamed
Stupid and wild poster boy you're society's child
Cut your teeth, cut your mouth, cut it out

Meteor rise from obscurity
All it took was a killing spree
And the whole world was lying at your feet
Golden boy, golden boy

I know my place, stick to my lines
Stay in your shadow, don't block your light
So you can shine divine
So you can shine divine
Golden boy, golden boy, golden boy

General Comment"GOLDEN BOY was a song I wrote without being absolutely certain of its meaning. During the recording the engineer commented that he couldn't get the image of the infamous boys from Columbine High School out of his head. I sud-denly realized that I was addressing the unhealthy tendency we have as a culture to fix our attention upon our deviant and violent outcasts. Names of serial killers are easier to conjure than names of great humanitarians. We repeatedly make celebrities out of psychopaths whether we intend to or not." -N.Merchant

General CommentThis song to me means that even though everybody wants me, it's not always becase of my own doing but some factory fabrication to what's hot at the moment.

General CommentWhen I listen to this report on the state of our country, I can think of nothing else but WAR.
GOLDEN BOY, is the soldier coming home victorious from one of our wars overseas to a town where he was once nameless and now, he can't stop shining because of nothing other than a "killing spree"
"Everyone stops when you come around" the town is so proud.
"Idols are made" we made this soldier a hero "Golden"

"Brand New Face" "Meteor rise from obscurity" this kid that was once a nobody is now a hero.

"I know my place stick to my lines, stay in your shadow don't block your light, so you can shine divine" This verse belongs to his wife that must say the right thing so that he can seem the bigger hero.

The same lyrics fit to politicians, running for offices that have blood on their hands.

General CommentI seriously did not like this song for the longest time, and it had nothing to do with the song itself, but really just the title. Nonetheless, i kept returning to the song because melodically it was very beautiful. After many a listen i gave more weight to the lyrics, and like the "producer" that gives Merchant that comment, i myself cannot get those Columbine boys out of my head.

But my interpretation was not really the fascination with the deviant individual but rather those we praise or set on alters, and then the "killing spree" is a signifier of disappointed whether literally a killing of human bodies or killing of our souls. So that's how the Columbine boys fit in here, praised and or adored by their parents until the final act of absolute disappointment.

General CommentThis song also does poke fun at the vapidness and vagueness of our culture. We only watch watch the media present. Nothing could be real with the pressures that each child feels to 'live up' to expectations of culture.

General CommentWeird, I thought it was about Ted Bundy!! lol.....I have a fascination with the Crime Network and forensics and it sounds like the story of him, because of the line 'meteor rise from obscurity all it took was a killing spree - and the fact that he was a golden boy studying law, rubbing elbows with politicians, bright future, etc!! I suppost it works on a lot of levels this song but it will always be a Ted Bundy song to me as that is what i always think of when I hear it....i didn't realise it was written much later or didn't much think about it!! lol
