Secret Curse
anonymous hex on flavorless food and terrible sex
a day of no rhythm a night of no rest
and I do not know what sin I have not confessed

Secret Curse
terrible blight I'm deafened by sound and blinded by light
caught when I flee and beat when I fight and I'm cocky when wrong
and timid when right and I don't know what crimes have yet to come to light

But it's getting worse
indelible mark, tired at noon, wired at dark
a terrible bite, but never a bark, I don't know what else I can do

I don't know who you are... please, I'm sorry

Secret Curse
unwashable stain, ugly when bold, boring when plain
stricken with pleasure and taken with pain
and I'm nervous and lost and I can not refrain

Secret Curse
unsingable song, melody weird, getting it wrong
pussy when tender and brutal when strong
and I'm losing my friends as we're getting along
and I really do try to run that fast and long but it gets there first

Invisible eye, sad if I laugh, mad if I cry
screwed if I live, screwed if I die
I try and I try and I don't know what else I can do

i heard somewhere that travis wrote this as soon as he heard the band was opening for pearl jam. i'd like to hear eddie vedder belt out the chorus of this one.

I think everyone's felt this way... you know, on those days when it feels like the world is out to get you, and there's nothing you can do that's right.

To me, this song is talking about something deeper than having a bad day. This song is coming from someone who's been having a bad day for a few years running.

Here I am, as I always am, to put fit these lyrics with my own situation...

I see this as coming from someone who is experiencing a day (or several days) of absolute unsuredness ("screwed if I live, screwed if I die" "I don't know what sin I have not confessed" "I don't know what else I can do"). It's like when you get in one of those situations where you try and try to fix a problem with someone who is new to you ("I don't know who you are") when you probably shouldn't be trying so hard, but instead you try to say and do too much, and are left hopeless (""I don't know what else I can do.. please, please, I'm sorry" "and I really do try to run that fast and long but it gets there first" "I'm nervous and lost and I can not refrain") So basically, they are going through a very emotional time, and are trying to simultaneously start a serious relationship with someone, and are putting everything they have into this relationship, thinking it will be the answer to their emotional stress ("and I'm losing my friends as we're getting along") when in reality, the emotional stress is taking its toll on the relationship, and their only solution is to try harder and harder... which only makes things worse.

On the good side, this song does seem to serve as recognition of the situation, and also seem to be their plea for forgiveness for their actions "please... please.. I'm sorry." A great song about venting emotional stress and expressing a need for forgiveness.

It sounds to me like a rockstar who realizes that being in a rock band/on tour isn't as glamorous as it's made out to be.

Deafened by sound, blinded by light can explain the aspect of being on tour. "Ugly when bold, boring when plain ... pussy when tender, and brutal when strong" can be about people criticizing their music (someone is always going to complain about their musical direction, regardless of what style they choose)

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
