"Drugs are Good" is the first of two songs on NOFX's 1995 12" EP, HOFX, the A-side to "We Ain't Shit." HOFX has seen only one release, as a pressing of one-thousand picture discs and...
Want to fuck off, drop out
Never trust a fuckin' hippie
For that matter don't trust anyone

Quit school, don't work
Livin' up the music you punk
If I could do it so could anyone

Drugs are good
They make you do things that you know you not should
And when you do them people think that you're cool
And when you do them people think that you're cool

Want to join a punk band
Shave your head and get a tattoo
You don't need talent just the attitude

Self destruction
For no particular reason beat up everyone

Drugs are neat
And you can buy them relatively cheap
And when you do them people think that you're cool
And when you do them people think that you're cool

General Commenti personally beleive that this song is more anti drug than pro drug. its like that afroman song, cuz i got high. at first listen it sounds like the guy is advocating pot, but then he starts talking about the mess that is his life. in this song, it sounds like nofx is making more of a mockery of people that do drugs because its cool. then again, i might just be giving them more credit than they deserve.

General CommentI love this song. I've probably played it on loop countless times this week. I think that people are very tight-lipped about drugs on this site, and, I feel a bit sad about it. Consider marijuana, for example, put a filter on the joint and it's probably better for you than a cigarette. It has no physically addictive qualities unlike nicotine and no one has ever died from marijuana use as a direct cause (marijuana overdose is nonexistent). In fact, the reason why marijuana was originally outlawed in the States was because Mexicans were frequently known to use it and the US government wanted a reason to send Mexicans back to Mexico.

Aside from the obvious drug mention in the song, drugs also stand for something else. Looking into punk rock culture, there is an obvious need for rebellion. In here, drugs are a symbol for rebellion. You look cool when you rebel. No reason, just do it to rebel. This is also a symbol of the deconstructionist attitude of punk rock. Beating up people randomly, never trusting anyone, vandalizing property, etc are all symbols of mindless destruction that has no obvious direction except to the ambiguous 'system.' Thus, 'drugs are good' isn't just an advertisement for drugs, it's a symbol of the times and mentality.

General CommentNOFX does drugs and they drink a lot...el hefe and mike even said backstage at the warped tour last year was all about "blunt n' cunts"....figure it out for yourself. and what fat mike said about doing drugs :"if you drive 120 mph, act stupid and get killed, it's not the drugs; it's you" you CAN use drugs responsibly and still have fun but most morons can;t understand that. figure it out chumps.

General Commenttelling people to kill themselves because they don't agree with you and you think that's stupid isn't as clever as you think it is

and you're also kind of a dick, and NOFX wrote a song about people who think the way that you do, called "the black and white." check it out.

some people DO think that you're cool for doing drugs, and a lot of those people participate in the scene that NOFX grew up in. infact, every member of NOFX was probably one of those people, at one point. this gives NOFX the perfect perspective to write a song like this, since they aren't just judgemental fucks who don't actually know anything yet still treat their opinion as if it were fact, like you. just because YOU have a low opinion of people who think that doing drugs is cool and you like NOFX at the same time, that doesn't mean that fat mike agrees with you.

i think fat mike is dead serious about everything he's saying. he likes drugs. they are relatively cheap. when you do them, people will think you are cool. this is documented fact. it's presented in a tongue-in-cheek manner but i don't think it's sarcasm. i think, if anything, that he's making fun of the person he used to be (and the punk culture as a whole) while sort of saluting it at the same time. punks have a weird respect for people who make their lives intentionally harder by making a shitload of "bad" decisions for selfish reasons and live through it, and NOFX certainly did that.

it's not all black and white, is all i'm saying. you can make fun of shit you did while still respecting the fact that you did it.

General CommentThe correct opening is "1, 2, Fuck Off" not Want To.

You say "Real" lyrics, and it's still off.
