I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
We're living in divided times
The world has gone and lost their minds
Believe whatever your hero says
A little closer to the edge
So light the night and watch as cities burn
Playing follow the leader like a true believer to the point of no return
It makes no sense, just coughing up the same
When you just can't win but get pawned again in a better player's game
We're living in divided times
Consumer goods to advertise
Bad blood bones picked clean again
But somebody somewhere's cashing in
Empty words get taken to extremes
The mental mob's excuse to give you the juice or a noose or a guillotine
It just keeps on and no one seems to care
While the blasts from the past that were all such a gas keep hanging in the air
It's another headline every day
It's another headline every day
Wasted words, forgotten yesterday
The last commandment taught the rule of force
Cheated in class when you took a collision course
And the bats in the belfry always want to sell me the same old thing
But the sound of the crowd as the ship goes down oughta keep you entertained
It'll keep you entertained
We're living in divided times
Where the cameras never close their eyes
Another fire in another store
Well, I think I've seen this show before
We're living in divided times
Where we ignore what we recognize
Saw the writing on the wall
But there was no one left to take the fall
Saw the writing on the wall
No one left to take the fall
Saw the writing on the wall
Now there's no one left at all
And now there's no one left to take the blame
No one left to buy the lie when we make the same mistakes
The same old stories written once again
when we burned the books that were warning us of what could have been
What could have been
The world has gone and lost their minds
Believe whatever your hero says
A little closer to the edge
So light the night and watch as cities burn
Playing follow the leader like a true believer to the point of no return
It makes no sense, just coughing up the same
When you just can't win but get pawned again in a better player's game
