"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
The first time you meet her, your body tense to greet her, her sweet smell, it haunts you and all pain drifts away. She brings all meaning to the light that starts your day. That's even in the rain. The tenth day of your life, she holds the hand that swings by your side, your bodies intertwine, and there's no need to say. There's nothing that's as real as the love between your lips, a jealous dream everyone reveals when they see you kiss. And then you walk away. All your love for all your life set in perspective against her back porch light, now we see what it means as she softly screams-that you wanted this more than anything in your life. And now that it's yours you need something more. For all your life, you feel, like you're missing something. And all your life, you can tell where your mistakes all began.
