"Underwater" as written by and Jon Hopkins....
It's in her head, it's in her mind
She can't believe it
Can't believe she's running out of time

And any hold that she can find
Something to lean on
Everybody fails her half the time

Nothing to be
She's already been
Oh, in plenty of time
Plenty of time
Plenty of time

She lights her candle, six A.M.
Starting a new one
Every new one hits her just the same

Just like clock work
She climbs down into her bottle
Yeah, and no one down there cares to know her name

She's underwater, nowhere now
She's underwater, upside down
The rising tide won't find her now
She's lost and found
Underwater

She's underwater
She's underwater, but she won't drown
She can't believe it
And everyone she meets feels just the same

It takes all day to get to tonight
What makes the sunset
And what makes it go back to where it came

Nothing to be
She's already been
In plenty of time
Plenty of time
Plenty of time

She's underwater, nowhere now
She's underwater, upside down
The rising tide won't find her now
She's lost and found
Now she's upside down
Now she's six feet down

Underwater
Underwater
Underwater

General Comment"Life is so short. Everyone is running out of time. Who can be trusted? We are all so human and fail each other so often. Every new day we face the same old problems; every new day hits us just the same. The girl in Underwater faces the dilemma of modern humanity. There's nothing to be in a world where nothing really matters. And besides she's tried so hard plenty of times. Without Christ as our foundation, we are thrown by waves of despair, swimming in a sea of hopelessness. She climbs down into the bottle, looking to drown her desperation in alcohol. She hides from the reality of life underwater, where she can forget about her burning needs. Underwater is a place to hide from the world. As Christians, we seek to be found in Christ, living in his love and truth. Sometimes however, we find ourselves seeking our fulfillment elsewhere: in relationship, in our jobs or even in acting out religion. Apart from Christ's foundation, we are living in fake reality, lukewarm and directionless, upside down, underwater." -Jon Foreman

General CommentThis, to me, is a song about a girl who lives an unfulfilling life. Since she doesn't have anyone she can rely on

("And any hold that she can find
    Something to lean on
Everybody fails her half the time)

so she turns to smoking and drinking ("candle" maybe symbolizing a cigarette... I dunno, maybe--and the "bottle", of course). These just make matters worse, and what's worse, her life's passing before her eyes. Sounds to me like she's on the downward spiral, in over her head, and thinks she's still got time to get out. Like the people who constantly say "I could quit smoking at any time if I wanted to," yet never quit. They deny their addiction. She's in denial as well, over maybe more than one thing. I dunno, just my interpretation. Awesome song, the jazz-piano bit in the middle was a nice touch.

General Commentthat post sums it up now i really understand. i am not the best at interpreting poetry. this song reminds me too much of my sisters life story. it is a very good song. i love switchfoot because their songs are too true. its not just another one of those pop songs that nobody can relate to. their songs aren't about trash like someone putting on makeup on a saturday night. i love all of their songs for not only the truth but i love the guitar and drums. (i just love instruments.)
