"Ask For Answers" as written by Brian Molko, Stefan Olsdal and Steven Hewitt....
Time to pass you to the test. Hanging on my lover's breath.
Always coming second best. Pictures of my lover's chest.
Get through this night, there are no second chances.
This time I might.
To ask the sea for answers.
Always falling to the floor, softer than it was before.
Dog boy, media whore, it's who the hell you take me for.

Give up this fight, there are no second chances.
This time I might.
To ask the sea for answers.
These bonds are shackle free, wrapped in lust and lunacy.
Tiny touch of jealousy, these bonds are shackle free.

Get through this night, there are no second chances.
This time I might.
To ask the sea for answers.
These bonds are shackle free
These bonds are shackle free
These bonds are shackle free
These bonds are shackle free

Get through this, there are no second chances.
This time. To ask the sea for answers.

General CommentI always thought this song was about a confused friendship. The two people aren't actaully romantically committed to each other 'These bonds are shackle free', but they're still wrapped in 'lust' and perhaps there's 'jealousy' of each other's lovers. They feel that in the other's estimation they're 'always coming second best'. Perhaps they think that something outside can help them, 'ask the sea for answers', but they know they have to do it themselves.

General Commentso this one to me is about a relationship gone bad, fading as silver turns to blue, if you will. he's sort of desperate about this lover of his, and so he hangs into every tiny detail, even his breath. it's probably a male too, since he says 'chest' and not 'breast'.
but it seems he's the only one who actually cares about the relationship, he's not being taken seriously by his lover, and coming second best.
so he's desperate, and a night without his lover is something to het through with, like, he can't stand the wait and the loneliness anymore. and he asks the sea for answers because he's so desperate he thinks no-one else would understand. but you know, there's a beachy sound to it, so he's probably thinking things over slowly and continuously, like the moves of a wave.

he's always falling to the floor because he depends deeply on this relationship, and is deperate thinking it's gonna end. and floor feels softer now, since he's fallen so many times. the dog boy, media whore thing.. well, we all now what brian looked like at the time, and wasn't being taken seriouly, not by his lover, neither by the press.

he wants to give up on their fights, because he feels his chances are over, as the relationship's soon gonna be.

their bonds are shackle-free, and that's sort of like a hope to him, and so he keeps telling himself that. and their bonds are wrapped in lust and lunacy because the person only wants.. well, sex.

General CommentThe key line in the song is "these bonds are shackle free"...I see it as Brian and a male friend that bonded and became close and Brian fell for him although it was a forbidden relationship. If it had been a female I strongly believe Brian would have used the term "breast" instead of "chest" breast is a term commonly used in a female sense and chest in a male sense. Perhaps he was batteling whether to tell his friend or not that he was in love with him therefor testing their friendship "time to pass you to the test".

General CommentTime to pass you to the test.
(Do you really care for me?)
    Hanging on my lover's breath.
    (I really care for you)
    Always coming second best.
(You care more for someone else)
    Pictures of my lover's chest.
(But I can’t help but think of you)
Get through this night, there are no second chances.
(I’ll stand by you even if it hurts, out of fear I might lose you forever)
    This time I might.
To ask the sea for answers.
(I will stand by you then, and hope for the best)

Always falling to the floor, softer than it was before.
(But you keep taking me for granted, and it hurts more everytime)
Dog boy - media whore, it's who the hell you take me for.
(To you I’m just a servant always at your beck and call)

Give up this fight, there are no second chances.
(So maybe I should just give up on you even if I do lose you forever)
    This time I might.
To ask the sea for answers.
(perhaps I will, and then let’s see what happens)

These bonds are shackle free, wrapped in lust and lunacy.
(I love you unconditionally, with both body and mind)
Tiny touch of jealousy, these bonds are shackle free.
(And although I might feel jealous sometimes, I will never hold you back)

Get through this night, there are no second chances.
    This time I might.
To ask the sea for answers.
    These bonds are shackle free
    These bonds are shackle free
    These bonds are shackle free
    These bonds are shackle free

Get through this, there are no second chances.
This time. To ask the sea for answers.

General CommentI interpret the song that Brian does love the person he is singing about. The person has wronged him time and time again. Finally Brian has decided that there will be no more second chances, the bond of love does not mean he has to be shackled to them, he can walk away and ask the sea for answers (get drunk).

My InterpretationFor me this song tells a story of a man who finally gets the courage to make a first step and express his feelings to a person who he fell for.
It is so hard to put your defences down, to uncover you true self for her to see and act as if there were no tomorrow, as there were “no second chances”. But nevertheless he does that and passes her to a test. He kisses her- or if you wish- he hangs on his lover’s breath (beautiful metaphor, isn’t it?). It is truly a test, because he is still uncertain whether his expectations would meet reality, or will she reject him. But the magical moment lasts and later that night their clothes fall to the floor as the reality starts to get softer and softer.
This is a truly moving description of sex and love. First you have to “give up this fight” and expose yourself to a possibility of being hurt, you have to stop controlling yourself and only then the real intimacy can happen.
…Wow, this is hard to believe, but this song made me realize that I don’t have to hold such hatred to a girl who hurt me once so deeply. Because despite how it have ended there were some very precious moments as well. Love requires us to bond to one another, but when you put shackles to your lover you hurt both of you. Sometimes you have to give up a fight and just let her go.
    Wonderful song!

General Commentthis is a beautiful song, i dont understand what it means, but i have my own interpretation. I think its about brian, he's given up, but its still in inspiration to me. I listen to this song before i study and go to school. It helps me a lot. "there are no second chances", I know the song isn't about that, but still... actually now i think about it. i think the song is about being different, you dont have to be what everybody else tells you to be, despite what they all say. you can do what you want to do. What would have happened if placebo had chosen to conform and become another teeny dance band? they would have gone down a long time ago for a start. Good on them, giving their music to the 'normal' people of this world. they deserve thanks for their wonderful music, especially this song.

General Commentshit, this song blew me away. i can see where ur coming from jimmy. I read it a little differently but maybe its just cause im relating it to my life. the references to a lover make me think that this song is about a person falling for someone they cant have. Now the persona is feeling the strain..."time to pass you to the test." can they continue on like this?? the person they love is the only thing allowing then to "hang on." but the object of their affection finds love in other places. Now as the persona contemplates finding answers in death, they hope they can just get through this night and overcome the lonliness. Because after all, once you take your life, "there are no second chances." When he says "these bonds are shackle free" it could be that loving this person is painful but its something he willingly chooses for himself. The lust, lunacy, jealousy... all things that come with loving someone you cant have. F i love this song!! whatever it means its unbelievable. But I think there is some truth to what i have to say. The rest is just what i want the song to mean.

General CommentAbsolutely love this song. I've listened to it constantly lately, it's just one of those songs that fits so well into certain situations, but can be pretty universal. I have a different interpretation almost every time I listen. He also sounds wonderful on this track.

General Commentperhaps it's about wanting to drown yourself. "always coming second best" is maybe about how you could never quite do anything right. and "ask the sea for answers" refers to how you think if you drown yourself, your questions about life will be over. "give up this fight" refers to giving up on life.
