The summer days are gone too soon
You shoot the moon
And miss completely
And now you're left to face the gloom
The empty room that once smelled sweetly
Of all the flowers you plucked if only
You knew the reason
Why you had to each be lonely
Was it just the season?

Now the fall is here again
You can't begin to give in
It's all over

When the snows come rolling through
You're rolling too with some new lover
Will you think of times you've told me
That you knew the reason
Why we had to each be lonely
It was just the season

Will you think of times you've told me
That you knew the reason
Why we had to each be lonely
It was just the season

General Comment:A summer fling that didn't work out. One person puts everything on the line...shoots the moon, makes a move on a person that they are crazy about and misses completely. Sad song but it happens. You move on to someone else but never forget that one that you missed. Turns out, looking back, maybe it would have been good if it didn't miss because they are both lonely today.

    My Interpretation:
It’s a song about a very dear friend who has passed away but sending a message through a song to his dearest friend, telling her that it was time for him to go.

Summer days, those happy memories together, it’s always gone to soon.
Even though she tried everything to keep him, it was time for him to go and so no matter what she did, it’s like shooting the moon. Any other ways, it will always be missed completely.

So she has to face the gloom. Left with sweet memories that had once filled the now empty room. It’s like comparing to the beautiful flowers that you plant; you know the reason that in time it will fade away.

And the fall is here again. She is still grieving with the lost of her beloved friend. She can’t even begin to try to give in, to let go, to accept, that it is all over. He wants her to know that there will also be a time when season passes that she will find a new love that will come into her life. Someone who will keeps her warm when it’s cold in the winter. Glimmer of hope. She will move on. And by loving again, she will keep him alive through the love that they once had. And so he will not be forgotten. So in this sad moment, understand why we had to each be lonely. It was just a matter of time.

He is telling her to remember that the loneliness it is just a matter of time. When the right time comes; they will meet again somewhere in the new season.

I miss you Gizmo. Till we meet again you are always in my heart.

General Comment:To me this song is about a relationship, not necessarily a fling. I think its about reflecting on a past relationship, that you put so much into, but you weren't right for that person for some reason or another. And even though that person may have loved you, they have moved on...and you are still wondering why. Even though they told you they loved you, they are still going to love eventuallly someone else again. As a new season approaches, so does another person.

General Comment:I see this song as a relationship song, too, but I see it as a song about two "just friends" who watched each other go in and out of many romantic relationships before getting together with each other. I might be totally off, but that's the story I visualize when I hear this song.

General Comment:So beautiful...one of those hidden gems in an album. As for the meaning of the song, for me, I agree with what treena1155 said about it.

    "You shoot the moon
    And miss completely,"

Though like I always say, it's better to try and fail than to regret never having tried at all.

General Comment:I'm with "missasha". I love the whole album, but I think this is my favorite song. I listen to it over and over. It seems as though she's talking about a lost love...something everyone can relate to.

General Comment:"Shoot The Moon" has a real lullaby quality to it. It is, by far, my favourite song on the album.

General Comment:This song is perfection. Lost love, new love, summer romance--it's captured perfectly here. It's sad, but there's a glimmer of hope and moving on, if not forgetting.
