This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

This song is so funny. It's obviously about how annoying it is to have all these little things go wrong. Some of the lyrics are so clever like "broke the yolk no joke", and "tried to find my sock" is my favorite opening lyric ever. This song just constantly amuses me, but it does get pretty repetitive after a a while.
Now, any Tom, Dick, or Carlos can see it's about a guy having a crappy day -- something that DOES happen to every Tom, Dick, and Carlos.
the song title is actually "Something's Gone Wrong Again" and not "Something Goes Wrong Again" but nevermind, cool song, just a bit too long in my opinion
