"Carnival" as written by and Jeremy Enigk....
What were my intentions in time will bring good
and so we'll make this our own paradise

where blue eyes should look

so i played again to lay down myself

the lines made me perfect and came then

the light gave me dark

threw myself in your door

you stared at me with those eyes

and caught your disease

then swallowed ideas to skin

and left standing there

and so we'll make this your own paradise

where all eyes would stare

so i played again to lay down myself

the lines made me perfect and came then

the light gave me dark.

General CommentAnother song that is underappreciated. It's just.. beautiful. The build up is so intense and.. oh gosh.

My Interpretationwell i don't see any interpretations here so i thought i'd give a try. next to each line ill put what i think is being said. well for the lines i have thoughts about.

What were my intentions in time will bring good "even though all my actions haven't turned out well, the intention to do good things will eventually work out if i keep striving for it"

and so we'll make this our own paradise "and as long as we try do good things, we will eventually make the world better"

where blue eyes should look "and it will be an example for people who are preoccupied with superficial things to learn from"

so i played again to lay down myself "so i continued to try to act well and attempt to stop being egocentric and put others before myself"

the lines made me perfect and came then ---not sure about this line

the light gave me dark "acting morally was a light that showed me contrast and made life clearer to me"

threw myself in your door "i showed you my vulnerabilities"

you stared at me with those eyes " you saw my weaknesses and were happy to exploit them"

and caught your disease "you tried to change my mind about my ideals and i let you"

then swallowed ideas to skin "i accepted ideas that really should be dissected and analyzed further"

and left standing there "these ideas ended up isolating me"

and so we'll make this your own paradise "and by acting this way, all we do is make things better for ourselves and not everyone else."

where all eyes would stare "you'd rather have people envy your happiness than to have people, themselves, be happy"

so i played again to lay down myself "and even though i doubted my plan, I'll try it again now..."

the lines made me perfect and came then

    the light gave me dark.

so i think the idea of this song is someone making you doubt your faith and because theyre unhappy and cynical they want you to be. other lines i think were left out. "and two wrongs waste my time" at least i think thats the line...he's saying even though someone tried to sabotage his beliefs and jade him, probably for malicious reasons, he won't retaliate..."the same sign" he repeats at the end...he's saying retaliation would just perpetuate a negative cycle and the he'd never be able to strive to make a change in the world with his actions. i'm not really sure how the title relates. if anyone has any thoughts about any of this, i'd love to hear them.
