"Do You Want To Play?" as written by and Jewel Kilcher....
Met her on a Friday afternoon
In a neon day-glow pink
Chiffon satin room
She never looked back
She always looked good
Dressed in black
And she says oh
Do you want to play?

She lived beneath the
Disco discount store
With pictures of Randy Newman
Scattered all across the floor
I said "This place
Looks sort of desolate"
She said
"Are you only half alive?
Or have you simply always
Been this inarticulate?"

Do you want to play?

Don't think too hard
Don't think too fast
Don't ever try and say
What you can't take back
Don't try and comprehend
What you can't understand
Beneath the disco daylight
Neon crystal chandelier
Pink champagne deity
I said "Take it back
Take it back
Take it back"

Do you want to play?

Do you want to play?

My InterpretationI think this is a really fun song with a great tune but I'm struggling with the lyrics.

"With pictures of Randy Newman scattered all across the floor"

Who was Randy Newman and what does this mean?

And here is a line that crops up in many Jewel songs:
"She said, "Are you only half alive or have you always been this inarticulate?""

"Inarticulate" is a standard insult that Jewel uses often in her writing.

General CommentI remember reading somewhere that she said this was a song written about a girl she met. And then that's all I know. I still don't know what it means. Someone explain! or try!

General CommentOn the little paper insert that comes with the CD and has the lyrcis on it she mentions that this song has a hidden meaning... I think it's about a lesbian experience to be honest.
