"You" as written by and Steven M./shanks Krikorian....
Your dress looks good on you my love
And your house looks like it's heaven
Why are there
So many people outside of it
Everything you have will be
You can't take anything with you
Except the love
The love I have for you
Your eyes look like they're from god
And your face looks like it's from god
Why are you
Going to be
Outside eternity
Everything we know will be
You can't take anything with you
Except the love
The love I have for you
I know you want to

General CommentI'm having a difficult time seeing that there are so few comments on this song. I've listened to it for a number of years and my understanding of it has gradually evolved, so maybe I just think about it too much.

To me, it's about him coming to the understanding that the woman he loves is caught up in the here and now--she doesn't understand what it is to exist beyond the physical plane.

"Your dress looks good on you my love / And your house looks like it's heaven" describes a person who is caught up in the physical, in making things around her beautiful and sacred. She cannot see past that, though, and he laments the fact that she will not see Heaven with him: "Why are you / going to be outide eternity? / Everything you know will be.." This is also clear in the lines "Your eyes look like they're from God / And your face looks like it's from God." He is essentially saying that he is reminded of the beauty of Creation in this woman he loves, and he can't understand how she can't accept Jesus, accept salvation.

Also, "Why are there so many people outside of it?" serves a double meaning: you could take it as 'why are there so many people outside of your house,' but you could also take it as 'Why are there so many people outside of Heaven,' as he refers to her house looking like Heaven in the line before.

This is interesting to me because it is clear through many of Jon's songs that he has the same crazy relationship that many people do with God--it is a struggle to keep the Faith, gasping for air in a sea of people belittling you for your beleifs and stereotyping you. He struggles with the idea of faith through many of his songs, and for this to be such a clear message, such a plea to his love to just see the light... well, it's both touching and sad.

General Commentit's not sad though...it's majestic...he's saying all your material goods are worthless in eternity's sight...all you need is his undying love...pretty joyful, not sad. I can see why you would say that at first though, but a closer examintation of the lyrics shows otherwise i think.

General CommentThe mean I can pick up from this song is that the author's love has died ("Why are you
Going to be outside eternity?" / "Why are there so many people outside of it?"). And when he says "You can't take anythink with you except the love, the love I have from yoy", may show how his love didn't care too much about his love.

General CommentIts about a funeral, someone close dying. lyrics are pretty self-explanetary when you see it like that

General CommentI think it's about someone dying, too. It may be a strange interpretation, but I think it's from the perspective of a murder. He fell in love with a woman, but she was more into material things. Having much money, a man with a good status etc.. So in his desperation he decided to kill her to be with her in eternity, where all this material things don't exist. The line "Why are there so many people outside of it?" was the reason for this interpretation. If she'd died in a normal way there would be no reason for the people to stay outside (near) the house. Well, I guess I'm totally wrong with this one, but this could be a possibility, too. So why don't post it?
Very beautiful song btw.. I'm always searching for calm music like this. Very touching...

General CommentIt does seem to be about a dead girl. Think about it from the perspective of suicide though. In Christianity (especially Catholicism) it is believed that a person who kills themselves, can not be accepted into Heaven, hence the question: "Why are you going to be outside eterninty?" I believe this song is written from the perspective of a person who had someone close to them kill themselves. He is viewing the body at the wake and dealing with the surreal feelings of confusion and sadness that accompany the death of a loved one. He is also trying to come to grips with the the fact that this person appears divine( Your eyes look like they're from God And your face looks like it's from God ) yet he doubts that he will see her again in the afterlife. He is bidding this loved one farewell and sending his love but also grieving the fact that he will not see her again because she commited an unforgivable sin.

General CommentI also think that its the scene of a funeral. It follows a person that was very close to the deceased. The person would be standing by the open coffin inside the deceased person's house looking at her, from there he would go out onto street and sees all the people walking up the lawn to the house to pay thier respects, then probably colapses on the ground and looks at the sky for a while.
    Probably wrong though haha.
