"Amen" as written by and Jewel Kilcher....
You're mother's child
But night lays you down
Hair aflame, wild look in your eye
Naked belly to the ground
A forest fire
Nibbles at your veins
Crawls up your arm
Runs away with your mind
And burns dry thoughts like leaves
Amen

Eyes stare up
But something's in the way
In the Bible only angels have wings
And the rest must wait to be saved
A dry tongue
Screams at the sky
But the wind just breathes words in
As a strange bird tries to fly
Amen

Pieces of us die everyday
As though our flesh were hell
Such an injustice, as children we are told
That from God we fell,
Where are my angels?
Where's my golden one?
Where is my hope
Now that my heroes have gone?
Some are being beaten
Some are being born
And some can't tell
The difference anymore
Amen

Amen, amen, amen
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

General CommentOK so I think that this song is about a heroin addict.... "hair aflame wild look in your eyes....a forest fire nibbles at your veins, crawls up your arm runs away with your mind"....thats about shooting up and getting high...And "eyes stare out but somethings in the way" If you've ever seen someone on heroin its an accurate description...and the references to God I think have to do with the fact that most people have a very finite understanding of God and they feel that everything bad that happens to them is because of God and that he's just supposed to just sweep down and save us ....but i think people should stop blaming God because if they understood anything about him they would understand that he left man to his own free will and that he offers unconditional love to everyone weither you choose to accept it or not

General CommentIt's about how life is so "unfair." (i hate to use that term b/c i'm not sure if that's exactly what i'm going for) It's about people trying to find a salvation (God, Heroine, Role Models, etc) but nothing can really become that. And people are so lost b/c of it.

General CommentThis is my favorite Jewel song. It's about questioning religion so I think it's interesting that it follows "Angel Standing By" on the cd.

General Comment"Pieces of us die everyday. As though our flesh were hell. Such an injustice, as children we are told that from god we fell. Where are my angels? Where's my golden one?"This stanza..... what guilt and freedom it must release. I love this song, its religious, but its not.... kinda like me..... and this line "Where's my hope now that my heros are gone? Some are being beaten Some are being Born and Some can't tell the Difference any more" That just broke me. I swear, I have never been so affected by a single thought than that one......

    utushushi.....*beautiful*

General CommentIn my opinion this song is about:

A girl seeing she's a sinner. I mean with the reference to fire and the rest of the words in the song and even the rest of the song has alot of religious/christian reference.

It's about how God sometimes let's you down or doesn't meet your expectations all the time, and almost questioning if he exists. And how the church tells you you're sinners and going to hell until you change yourself for something you can't see and even if it doesn't feel wrong they 'brainwash' you into thinking you're sinning and once you're older you feel guilty and it's hard to get rid of the 'values' instilled in you at such a young age.

    'Where are my angels?
    Where's my golden one?
    Where's my hope
now that my heros have gone'

And this is saying like, 'Where was God when I needed him? Where did he go? Why didn't he help me? Why isn't anyone rescuing/helping me', etc.

I have no idea of the meaning to Jewel herself, but for me it's about how religion is something you want, and God is something you want, but you want to be free of it and all the guilt it gives you and you're almost somewhat bitter that God wasn't ever there for you and you don't know where he/she went or if he/she was ever even there.

Songs always have different meaning for different people though. But it's a beautiful song and one of my favourite Jewel songs.

General CommentThis song is sung beautifully and is written interestingly. I think that what this song really means all depends on the listener because it is one of those songs that is very abstract and relies on people's induviduality to analyze in. To me, it is about someone who is confused in life and about where she really belongs. She is trying to figure out why the world is so cruel and she is trying to figure out why God is allowing everything to happen. This song is very beautiful and you need to get beneath the shell of it to feel it.

General CommentI think this song is about a mother who abondons her child. Or i think that the mother could be depressed and perhaps suicidal. Leaving the child to fend for itsself
