"J'ai demandé à la lune" as written by and Michael Furnon....
J'ai demandé à la lune
Et le soleil ne le sait pas
Je lui ai montré mes brûlures
Et la lune s'est moquée de moi
Et comme le ciel n'avait pas fière allure
Et que je ne guérissais pas
Je me suis dit quelle infortune
Et la lune s'est moquée de moi

J'ai demandé à la lune
Si tu voulais encore de moi
Elle m'a dit "J'ai pas l'habitude
De m'occuper des cas comme ça"
Et toi et moi
On était tellement sûr

On était tellement sûr
Et on se disait quelques fois
Que c'était juste une aventure
Et que ça ne durerait pas

My OpinionI think this song is about special friends, or friends with benefits, who never had any kind of official relationship structure. C'etait juste un aventure (It was just an adventure) implies sexual experimentation between them and the notion of exploring which is in a lot of indochine songs.
I think it's about the confusion that those kinds of relationships always end in.

Je n'ai pas grand chose a te dire - I haven't got anything important to say to you
Et pas grand chose pour te faire rire - An nothing to make you laugh
Car j'imagine toujours le pire - Because I always imagine the worst
Et le meilleur me fait souffrir - And the best makes me suffer

He's not going to tell her he loves her or anything, he just wanted to go on like they were and perhaps she's moved on because the relationship got old, she got bored or she met someone who she wanted more from. It also seems like a destructive but addictive relationship.

As for the sun/moon think that could imply the relationship was hidden, a thing of the night or that it's a nice phrase in french =p

I don't think there is a heartbreaker involved because I don't think this song is about a conventional love.

General CommentAwesome song...If you look at the translation (or you can read French), you can see it's a kind of a rejected love thing. He asked the moon, and it made fun of him; however, I don't know who the sun is.

General Commentmaybe the sun represents his lover, because he "asked the moon, which the sun don't know". The moon may represent a close friend. But I tend to think there's no hidden meaning in this song : everything is said, though in a very poetic way...

General CommentGood, but not quite, imho.
"J'ai demandé à la lune / Et le soleil ne le sait pas" Aurore's translation is correct - 'I asked the moon / but the sun doesn't know this'
"Je lui ai montré mes brûlures / Et la lune s'est moquée de moi" - 'I showed the moon my burns / the moon laughed at me'

"J'ai demandé à la lune / Si tu voulais encore de moi" - 'I asked the moon / If you [the sun] still wanted me'

"Elle m'a dit j'ai pas l'habitude / De m'occuper des cas comme ça" - 'The moon told me she wasn't used / to taking care of such situations'

"Et toi et moi on était tellement sûrs / Et on se disait quelquefois / Que c'était juste une aventure / Et que ça ne durererait pas" - 'You and I we were so sure / We sometimes told each other / That this was just a fling / That it wouldn't last'

All in all, I think the sun is the lover of the narrator (for want of a better word) and that she's more or less jilted him, given him the cold shoulder. Thus, he asks the moon for advice, whereupon she hesitates, and for sympahty as he's wounded, whereupon she laughs at him for having been hurt. Therefore I think the moon represents a friend of the sun, who must be a serial heartbraker since the moon laughs at the guy's pain. Furthermore, in the last verse, the man's voice is accompanied by that of a child's, reinforcing the lyrics' expression of the relationship being a fling, a game (as children do play)

General CommentI'm not shure the other person he's speaking of is a serial heartbreaker, because there is the line : "Et toi et moi on était tellement sûrs
    Et on se disait quelquefois
    Que c'était juste une aventure
Et que ça ne durererait pas"
To me, it means that both of us were thinking it would be nothing more than a "one-night-thing" but at the end they fell in love with each other and somehow they can't be together although they would like to, and it makes them suffer. Maybe they are deeply attracted to each other but cannot bear being together (a kind of "love-hate" relatioship if you see what I mean ;p ), or they are engaged elsewhere.

General CommentI always thought (like others here) that this song was about lovers who never intended to get close or have anything long term, but that the narrator has fallen for the other.

But I recently watched Indochine's video... and the singer spends the entire narrative walking towards the camera, first carrying a baby, then carrying a young girl, until finally an older girl (still in maybe her preteens) walks by herself and joins the singer in a duet.

This put a whole different twist on the song for me and made me wonder about it in context of a father raising a young girl, seeing the time they have together as a potentially short-lived adventure and hoping she would still want him to be a part of his life as she grows older.

That being said, the expression "C'était just une aventure" is more commonly used as "It was just a fling."

TranslationA few people have put in pieces of translation to help the discussion on this, and I wanted to put in a full one:

    (1)
    I asked the moon
And the sun didn't know it.
I showed her (the moon) my burns
And the moon made fun of me.

    (2)
And since the sky didn't look too good
    And I wasn't healing
I told myself what bad luck
And the moon made fun of me

    (3)
    I asked the moon
    If you still wanted me
She told me, "I don't usually
    Deal with situations like that."

    (4)
And you and I, we were so sure
    And sometimes we told ourselves
That it was just a fling
    And that it wouldn't last.

    (5)
I don't have much to tell you
And not much to make you laugh
Because I always imagine the worst
And the best makes me suffer

    Repeat (3) and (4)

My Interpretationi think the meaning of this song is more direct. there is a case in genetics diseases called Xeroderma where the patients are called "enfants de la lune" as "children of the moon". in this disease, you cant come out during the day because your skin is too sensible to UV light emanated by the sun so even in a very small dose, you will get skin cancer directly. also, most patients get cancer at a very young age and often cant live for more than "teenager stage". they only go out during the night to do everything! so in this song i think that its a child that has xeroderma singing about his case and how his only friend is the moon because she is the only one he spent time with (he cant go out during the day with everyone). so he is complaining to her, about the cruelty of the sun without him knowing "et le soleil ne le sait pas". although he is pathetic, the moon laughs at him and at his lost love: he maybe likes a girl who doesnt like him back have his disease but she doesnt love him anymore because his disease is too exhausting for their relationship so she doesnt want him anymore:"si tu voulais encore de moi". first maybe she was okay with it because they both hoped his situation was temporary (they are children and ignore its gravity) :"c'etait juste une aventure" , "ca ne durerait pas". then when they understand its a lifetime disease, she leaves and abandons him with no explication so he turn to the moon -the only one he spend long time with- and ask her questions "j'ai demande a la lune". in addition he says " le ciel n'avait pas fiere allure" as "the sky didn't look good" but to the opposite of what we may think, this doesn't mean the sky was stormy or dark, but on the contrary shiny and clear because in this case, sun and light are the enemy, and darkness is the friend so it makes sense that he is telling the moon that the sky didn't look good without her, during the day, with the sun shinning and burning bright. also he says" je ne guerissais pas" that means "i wasn't healing" that may refer to this permanent -aggravating through time-disease. at the beginning of the song he says: "je lui ai montre mes brulures" that may refer to the burns that patients can get so easily when exposed briefly to sunbeam. furthermore he says "le meilleur me fait souffrir" - translated:" the best makes me suffer". effectively the best can refer to all great experiences that every human can live and all the best activities one's can do. in that way, most of them are done during the day so it makes him suffer physically if he gets out (burns) and mentally because of his disease that doesn't let him live and enjoy like everyone else. finally the first sentence said by the moon is "j'ai pas l'habitude de m'occuper des cas comme ca". xeroderma is an extremely rare disease so in some way the moon doesn't usually deal with situations like that.

General CommentI believe there is clearly an 'affair' relationship involved...

The moon is actually the lover, and the sun is the wife (The sun does not know)

    J'ai demandé à la lune
Et le soleil ne le sait pas

    ------
He is actually not going through a happy marriage - the sun is burning him.

Je lui ai montré mes brûlures
Et la lune s'est moquée de moi

    -----
As the time moves... he does not get better with his wife

Et comme le ciel n'avait pas fière allure
Et que je ne guérissais pas

    ----
And he is resigned that he can not be with the moon... and the moon just pushes him away... they are just lovers.

Je me suis dit quelle infortune
Et la lune s'est moquée de moi

    -----

    J'ai demandé à la lune
Si tu voulais encore de moi
    Elle m'a dit "J'ai pas l'habitude
De m'occuper des cas comme ça"
    Et toi et moi
    On était tellement sûr
Et on se disait quelques fois
    Que c'était juste une aventure
Et que ça ne durerait pas

General CommentI'd like to point out something about the second comment, Aurore wrote :" he "asked the moon, which the sun don't know"". That's not exacly the good translation. The meaning of this setence is that the sun didn't know the the answer of the question asked...
